BROCKTON AVE - EMERGENCY WALL REMEDIATION. |
| |
___
While doing a renovation in March of 2007 I discovered a basement
wall that was severely distorted and in danger of collapse. The centre
of the wall had been pushed inward over 6" over the years by hydrostatic
pressure and created an exaggerated bow shape in the wall. Emergency shoring
posts were installed immediately every 4'. 9' Steel beams were placed
on the wall, and steel beams encased in concrete 6' below the floor level
acted as the bracing point of each triangulated soldier post.
|
|
|
 |
__
Holes were cut between each of the shoring posts through all 3 layers
of brick in order to install helical anchors into the earth using a
hydraulic motor and sectional pre engineered anchors. The anchors were
twisted into place until reaching the desired torque achieving an average
14' depth . Concrete forms were then built over the holes and filled
leaving the end of the anchor shaft protruding from the wall.
-
The wall remediation concept design was completed by Ted Footman &
Generic Versatility. Blackwell Bowick Engineering designed the structural
assembly and calculations, and EBS Engineering installed the helical
anchors. All other work was carried out by Generic Versatility

___A
clay & bentonite liner was used as a waterproofing membrane because
it needed to resist burning / melting when the steel wall assembly was welded
together. Footings were dug at the base of each post and welded to the anchors
at 7' up the wall. |
__The
upper wall of the building was also in need of replacement and suffered
much damage and distortion because of the shifting that took place below
grade. The exterior brick wall was removed and replaced with a concrete
block assembly. |

The
middle of the building had dropped over 3 inches over the years and I
used an unconventional jacking technique to correct the situation.
* this is very dangerous
and Generic Versatility does not recommend trying this method unlesss
you are a highly trained professional*
I didn't have the
power in my body to use my tractor jack (top) to lift the building so
I inverted the jack & used a hydraullic car jack to push the lever
arm of the tractor jack. This successfully lifted the building 2 1/2 inches
and then shot the 4x4" wood post accross the room and almost killed
me. |
